1887-1916. His family home was in Thanet, Kent. Studied history, but had an interest in literature. He won a 1 year scholarship to America, resulting in a book being published in 1914 'A Study of 17th Century Utopia and its Influence on America', republished in 1971. Hugh married in 1913, he had a son Roy in 1915. He was killed in WWI as was Rupert Brooke's other friend Ben Keeling socialist and patriot.
