Born in Cheshire of Irish parents, spent her early years in Belfast and France. Had her stage debut in 1910, she had toured America with the Irish Players, as well as appearing at Abbey Theatre, Dublin. Rupert Brooke first saw her in September 1912 when playing Perdita in The Winter's tale at the Savoy Theatre. Rupert and Cathleen would meet for the first time at the home of Edward Marsh, which Rupert used as his London dwelling, they met on 20th December 1912, she was 1 year 4 months younger than Rupert.
